My journey from a first-generation college graduate to a professional committed to social change equips me with a unique perspective. I understand the challenges faced by underrepresented communities and the importance of creating inclusive opportunities.
As a newly accepted member of MYPC, I am honored to join this dynamic group of young leaders. Working at the intersection of purpose and passion, I am eager to collaborate with a diverse range of professionals and invest my time and efforts into the council's programs. I look forward to growing from the diverse perspectives and experiences it will offer and contributing to the positive impact MYPC has on our community.
Grounded in my faith and driven by a desire to fulfill my life's purpose, I aspire to continue making significant contributions to my city. I believe that joining the MYPC is a step forward in this journey, allowing me to leverage my skills and experiences for the betterment of Montgomery.
Marked by the ongoing realignment with my passions and purpose, my journey demonstrates a commitment to purpose-driven work. Whether it was teaching in the Mississippi Delta, supporting the preservation of African-American culture across the state of Alabama, or managing cultural heritage at Alabama State University, each step in my career has been a testament to my dedication to making a meaningful impact.
My desire to serve on the Mayor's Young Professional Council stems from a deep commitment to fostering equitable communities. As a native of Yorktown, Virginia, and long-time resident of Montgomery, Alabama, my identity is shaped by the rich heritage of these places. Attending Alabama State University, an HBCU, deepened my dedication to community development through its celebration of African American history and culture. Montgomery's pivotal role in the Civil Rights Movement has inspired my active participation in creating a more equitable future. These experiences cemented my belief in integrating local culture and history into community development.
As the Strategic Partnerships & Project Director for Blackyard, LLC, I have honed my skills in building strategic partnerships and managing projects that intersect culture and social change. My current roles as Program Director for the Alabama River Diversity Network and Social Impact Director/Program Manager for Alabama Values/Alabama Values Progress further demonstrates my capability to work collaboratively and effectively with various stakeholders for community betterment across the Alabama Black Belt and the Deep South, respectively.
My vision for Montgomery involves creating a community where history, culture, and socioeconomic growth coexist harmoniously. I envision a city where the arts and history are not just remembered but are actively part of our daily lives and where every neighborhood flourishes equally.
Seamless Integration of Arts and History | One issue close to my heart in Montgomery is the seamless integration of arts and history into local businesses and public education. Arts and history are not just subjects to be confined within the walls of museums or classrooms; they are living, breathing aspects of our community that can enhance everyday life. By integrating these elements into local businesses and schools, we can foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of our rich cultural heritage among all residents.
Revitalization of Collapsing Neighborhoods | Another critical concern is the revitalization of collapsing neighborhoods, particularly due to the centralized development efforts focused on downtown Montgomery and the eastern parts of the city. Many communities are left behind in this development wave, leading to uneven growth and social disparities. By addressing these issues, we can ensure balanced development that benefits all Montgomery residents.
Pipelines to Civic and Social Participation | In addition, I am committed to creating opportunities for young Montgomery natives to shape our city's political, social, and cultural landscape. By addressing systemic barriers such as class, economic status, and cultural diversity, I believe in building pipelines that empower more young people to participate in civic and social activities. I aim to foster an inclusive environment where every young person can engage in civic and social activities, ensuring their voices and ideas contribute to a vibrant and equitable future for Montgomery.
